About the Founder: Manya Arond-Thomas, M.D.

I bring over 2 decades of experience in human and systems development to my work as an executive coach, consultant, trainer, and facilitator. Trained initially as a physician, my coaching approach offers what I believe is a powerful perspective on the integration of individual performance, personal development and well being with business results.

In being able to work as an executive and team coach in support of excellence, leadership, and organizational effectiveness, I found the perfect arena that allows me to integrate my passions, training and experience in health care and well-being, leadership development, emotional intelligence and personal development, team and organizational effectiveness, systems thinking, and transformational change management.

As an undergraduate at Harvard, I majored in Social Relations, an interdisciplinary field that integrated Psychology, Social Psychology, Social Anthropology and Sociology. These studies provided a rich foundation for looking at human behavior and systems. At this time, I was also fascinated with the inter-relationship of body, mind, and spirit as a system, and how that interaction supported healing and wellness. This interest led to my first career as a massage therapist, in which I provided therapeutic massage, counseling and healing services. My focus was on wellness and helping people mobilize their innate healing resources. Many of my clients came to me because they were dissatisfied with the care they were receiving from their physicians, both in terms of their actual health outcomes as well as in the quality (or lack thereof) of their interactions.

After listening to many folks complain about being treated symptomatically, as a disease, rather than as a complex person with a malady, I realized that I wanted to be an agent for change in helping to improve the health care delivery system. I really had no idea what would that mean at that time, and that question took me 13 years, and 2 more careers to answer!

However, I intuitively learned two things as a result of working as a healer:

1)  that you can’t work with the health of an individual without understanding the systems of which they are a part, and that you can’t work with the health of a system without looking at the individuals that make up the system; and
2) that great leadership, whether one-on-one or in groups, is founded in the skills of relationship management.

I subsequently became a physician and practiced Internal Medicine and Psychiatry for 5 years. Through that experience and my own study of leadership development, I realized that my deepest purpose was not in treating pathology and illness, but rather working in a broader arena where I could help people and systems unleash their potential and build on their strengths. Completing two certificate programs in Business Coaching and Planned Change/Organizational Development, and building on a 25 year history of personal coaching and working with human and systems development provided the foundation for my work as an executive coach and organizational consultant.

Manya holds a B.A. from Harvard in Social Relations and Human Behavior, an M.D. from the University of Massachusetts, with post-graduate medical training from Brown University and the University of Michigan. She is a Certified Business Coach, and is also trained and certified in a number of behavioral and organizational change methodologies and business assessment instruments.
